Le present article fait etat des donnees probantes recueillies par le biais de plusieurs etudes de Statistique Canada sur l'importance de l'innovation en tant que facteur de croissance et sur les besoins des entreprises novatrices en matiere de travailleurs hautement qualifies. Plutot que de nous concentrer sur de grands regroupements d'industries, comme c'est souvent le cas, nous avons prefere axer nos travaux sur les entreprises et leur comportement. Cette demarche nous permet de mieux comprendre le lien entre les strategies et la reussite des entreprises.
Nous avons observe que les entreprises prosperes attribuent leur reussite a l'acquisition de competences dans une vaste gamme de domaines. Cependant, l'innovation reste le facteur commun qui permet le plus souvent de distinguer les entreprises qui affichent une croissance rapide de celles dont l'expansion est plus lente. Les entreprises innovatrices, a leur tour, portent plus d'attention a l'acquisition et a la formation d'une main-d'oeuvre qualifiee.
Les etudes demontrent egalement que l'importance accordee a une main-d'oeuvre hautement qualifiee varie d'une industrie a l'autre. Dans les industries de biens, la strategie de formation complete la strategie en matiere d'innovation axee sur la R et D, l'adoption de nouvelles technologies de pointe ou la mise au point de nouveaux procedes. Les petites entreprises innovatrices assurent la formation de ses employes lorsqu'elles mettent en service de nouvelles machines et du nouveau materiel. Dans le secteur des services, la strategie en matiere d'innovation s'appuie dans une moindre mesure sur les nouvelles immobilisations et davantage sur les nouvelles competences de la main-d'oeuvre. Il appert qu'une strategie de formation, en soi, a une incidence plus marquee sur la reussite de l'entreprise, vraisemblablement parce qu'elle est plus susceptible d'etre la strategie par excellence de l'entreprise en matiere d'innovation.
