International Differences in Entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship and self employment are often considered major drivers of economic growth and development. Entrepreneurial firms can accelerate the speed of innovation and dissemination of new technologies into an economy, thus increasing a country’s competitive edge in the global market. Cultivating a strong culture of entrepreneurial thinking has become a primary goal in many countries, both in the developed world and in emerging markets. More than ever, countries are expanding their economic policies to include entrepreneurship as an effective way to develop long-term solutions for economic troubles. In spite of this, there is little systematic research or comparative analysis to display how the growth of entrepreneurship differs among countries in various stages of development. International Differences in Entrepreneurship seeks to fill this void by explaining how the institutional differences, cultural considerations, and personal characteristics of a country can affect the role that entrepreneurs play in their economies. This volume addresses fundamental problems in measuring entrepreneurship in a given country, as well as evaluating the impact it has on development. Of central importance to the volume is how to examine the origins of entrepreneurs to develop an understanding of their individual characteristics, the choices they make, and the complexity of entrepreneurs and their activities across countries and industries. In the second part of the volume, the authors consider how environmental factors of individual economies, such as market regulation, government subsidies for banks, and support for entrepreneurial culture affect the industry and the impact that entrepreneurs have on growth in developing nations.
