Joseph Alois Schumpeter (1883-1950) zählt zu den Vätern der Innovationsforschung und Konjunkturtheorien. Seine Werke wurden von zahlreichen Wissenschaftlern zur Grundlage der Forschung genommen. Die radikalen technischen Entwicklungen des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts, vor allem bei der Jahrtausendwende (die zu globalen Veränderungen in der Weltwirtschaft und der sozialen Verhältnisse führten) richteten das Augenmerk wissenschaftlicher Forschungen wieder Richtung Innovationen, Neuerungen, Richtung Schumpeters Theorien.
