Keynes y la crisis financiera actual
La obra de Keynes me parece inspiradora para analizar la crisis financiera internacional por los cuatro motivos siguientes: 1) Era un experto en finanzas. Seguidor atento de la evolución de los mercados. 2) La incertidumbre y las expectativas son un componente esencial de su pensamiento. 3) Fue observador en primera línea de la Gran Depresión. 4) Participó muy activamente en la creación de las instituciones internacionales que regularon las tres décadas posteriores a la segunda Guerra Mundial. Creo que Keynes hubiera contemplado sin gran sorpresa el desastre financiero actual, puesto que las ideas que han sustentado el hiperdesarrollo y la internacionalización de las finanzas, han sido las contrarias a las que él había sostenido en su madurez. Me parece que hubiera seguido, con alarma creciente, los excesos que han conducido a la crisis actual. Si tuviera que elegir una persona que encarnara los principios contrarios a los de Keynes, en lo que se refiere a las finanzas, votaría por Greenspan. Destacaría, sobre todo, en Greenspan, su extraordinaria confianza en la bondad del mercado financiero como asignador, y en su capacidad de autorregulación. En Keynes resaltaría su desconfianza, también extraordinaria, respecto a que la inversión, la variable esencial, se confiara a una institución que, como aludía en la Teoría General, se asemejara a un casino
