Mit Hilfe von Patentdaten können zugrunde liegende Wissensflüsse näherungsweise abgebildet werden, so dass insgesamt mit Patentzitationsanalysen erste Rückschlüsse auf die Diffusion von Technologien gezogen werden können. In dem Beitrag werden die Wissensflüsse über Technologien zur Klimatisierung von Fahrzeugen dargestellt. Sie sind umweltpolitisch sowohl im Hinblick auf die Reduzierung direkter Treibhausgasemissionen aus der Leckage problematischer Kältemittel als auch im Hinblick auf die Reduzierung indirekter Emissionen aufgrund des Treibstoffverbrauchs von Interesse. Von den insgesamt knapp 10 000 Patenten sind etwa ein Sechstel Umweltpatente. Sie stammen überwiegend aus Deutschland (28%), Japan (25%) und den USA (17%). Gliedert man die Umweltpatente weiter, zeigt sich, dass etwa zwei Drittel zur Einsparung indirekter Treibhausgasemissionen beitragen und etwa 30% zur Einsparung direkter Treibhausgasemissionen. Deutschland nimmt bei den Patenten zur Fahrzeugklimatisierung eine zentrale Rolle ein und ist auch bei der Teilgruppe der Umweltpatente gut aufgestellt.
