Der Primärenergieverbrauch der Welt hat in den letzten Jahren stetig zugenommen. Seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg ist er auf das heutige Niveau von 131 Mill. Gigawattstunden gestiegen. Lediglich ein leichter Rückgang von 1979 bis 1982, der auf die zweite Ölkrise zurückzuführen ist, unterbrach diesen Trend. Im Jahr 2008 führte die weltweite Rezession zu einem erneuten Rückgang. Weltweit konnte ein Sinken des Primärenergieverbrauchs um 1,1% vermerkt werden. Der vorliegende Beitrag gibt einen Überblick über die Zusammenhänge zwischen dem weltweiten Primär- und Endenergieverbrauch.
