Les divorces en France. Evolution récente et perspectives
Chantai Blayo and Patrick Festy. Divorces in France. Retrospect and Prospect. In many European countries, divorce rates which used to fall after five to seven years duration of marriage no longer do so, and have increased, irrespective of mariage duration. This has happened after laws have been passed liberalising divorce rate would be 17,4 % for couples married in 1974, as against approximately cohorts, divorce, which used to be relatively infrequent, now takes place at earlier durations of marriage and more frequently. On the assumption that the behaviour of French couples will approximate to that of their English counterparts, once the new law is in operation, the final divorce rate would be 17.4 % for couples married in 1974, as against approximately 10 % for previous cohorts. The average duration of marriage at divorce would be greatly reduced (from about 14 years to nine years), and this would lead to a considerable increase in the period divorce rates which would greatly exceed the ultimate cohort rate. In 1977, this might rise to 35 %, but the rate would fall thereafter to levels comparable with those of previous cohorts, provided later cohorts maintained the rates of that of 1974.
