Les origines d'une promotion de Polytechniciens
Le Bras Hervé. ? Social Origins of a Cohort of Students of the Ecole Polytechnique. A year's intake of students to the Ecole Polytechnique were questioned about their families and social origin. From the 272 replies received some anomalies emerged. It was found that in this group the social pattern of differential fertility was reversed : workers and white-collar employees had the smallest families and were older when their children were born than parents in other social groups. If the social status of the grand-parents, as well as of the parents, is taken into account, some typical patterns of social mobility emerged. Factors which affected entry to the Polytechnique were differences in the educational level achieved by the father and the mother, and the possession of a relative who had himself been a student of the school.
