Les politiques familiales en Europe de l'Est
Klinger Andràs - Population Policies in Eastern Europe In this paper population policies in six of the eight Eastern European countries (Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, the GDR, Hungary, Poland, and Romania) are discussed. The principal aspects of social legislation during the past years are examined: maternity grants, maternity leave, parental leave, family allowances, tax rebates, reductions in the working hours of employed mothers, as well as the provision of different kinds of child-care centres (day nurseries, kindergartens, nursery schools). The objective of all these policies has been to encourage women and couples to have children. Recent changes in Eastern Europe are unlikely to challenge these general objectives; indeed, they may even be strengthened.
