Light scattering in disordered solids
Low frequency Raman scattering experiments have been performed on borate glasses, phosphate glasses, and amorphous silica from liquid helium temperature to room temperature. We are able to separate the light scattering excess from the scattering due to acoustic modes in a quantitative way. We have found that at low frequency the product C(ω) g(ω) has an ω4 behaviour. The light scattering excess has a Lorentzian-like shape, and its intensity increases at increasing the temperature in an exponential way. Moreover we have found that the models based on two level systems fall in the description of the behaviour of the light scattering excess intensity as a function of temperature.
