Linking Employment and Poverty Changes between 1996 and 2001 In Cameroon

This paper studies the contributions of sector-specific and between-sector employment effects in accounting for aggregate poverty changes in Cameroon. We observed that the decrease in poverty among tertiary and secondary sector workers was considerably accounted for by the within-sector effects, whereas the increase in poverty among primary sector workers was largely attributable to the between-sector effects. The decrease in total household labour income in the poorest quintile is attributable to labour market participation rates and average days worked, but mitigated by household average daily earnings and employment rates
