Marine Energy in Chile

This is the first issue of a new series dedicated to deliver concise information on energy innovation published by the Energy Innovation Center at the IDB. This issue offers a primer on the potential for marine energy in Chile. The ocean is increasingly recognized as a viable source of renewable energy, and Chile, with its long coastline, powerful waves and tidal currents, has captured the attention of marine energy proponents. While harvesting this source of energy would increase sustainability and contribute to energy security, there are a host of challenges to realizing this potential. Among them are the industry's early stage of development and the logistics of connecting distant energy sources to markets. Overcoming these challenges requires targeted government policies and regulations. On the positive side, Chile has the resources, technical capacity, and a government committed to develop renewable energy.
