Marriage, Divorce and Cohabitation : A Vicious Cycle
Throughout this paper the Institution of Marriage is treated as given. I have tried to analyse the issue of divorces in a society and then look at the inevitability of it. I have tried to apply the concept of Exit, Voice and Loyalty in explaining the dynamics of divorces in the Indian society. The possibility of Cohabitation as a formal institution and the positives that it might have on the society on the whole, is also analysed. The paper is in some sense forward looking, in which the divorce rates in India are expected to shoot. Institutional changes are suggested to keep a check on the growing divorce rates as major economic, political and social instruments used in the developed countries have not brought about the desired results
