Mathematical Analysis of Mindanao State University Admission Test Scores as Predictors of Students’ Academic Performance
This study determined whether the MSU admission test scores are valid predictors of students’ academic performance. Mindanao State University – General Santos City, a premiere university in Southern Philippines, administers the MSU-System Admission and Scholarship Examination (MSUSASE) annually to effectively control the admission of students and ensure academic excellence. Determination of its predictive validity is important because the result of the test is the only basis in screening new students who wish to enter the University and in qualifying applicants for academic scholarships offered by MSU, regardless of their social standing, ethnicity, or class. Data gathered consisting of MSU-SASE component scores, total scores, and first year general point averages (GPAs) of 800 students randomly sampled for a period of five years were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation and multiple linear regression analysis. Results of the correlation analysis showed a significant relationship between MSU-SASE total scores and the GPA of the 800 students. The admission total scores were also related to the GPA of the non-tribal students. However, the scores of the tribal students showed no significant relationship with their GPAs. Analysis also showed that the individual component scores in Aptitude, Mathematics, Language, and Science were significantly correlated with the GPA of the students. Regression results showed that the admission test scores accounted for 18.5% of the variance in first year GPAs. These findings led to the conclusion that the MSU-SASE scores are valid predictors of students’ academic performance and, therefore, can be used as objective basis for college admission of students and grant of scholarships
