Mexico City's Bus Rapid Transit System and Air Quality
We measure the impact of Mexico City's Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system on air quality. Through a difference-in-differences strategy with staggered adoption of treatment, we show that the BRT is associated with important reductions in the concentrations of pollutants related to nitrogen oxides. However, this reduction is only observed when excluding construction from the pre-intervention period. We then conclude that studies that consider the construction period as part of the control group in empirical analyses of this kind are likely to underestimate or find null impact of public transportation on air quality
