Monnaies nationales ou régionales et réduction de la pauvreté en Afrique
Alors qu'en Afrique la plupart des États ont leur propre monnaie, quatorze se partagent entre deux Unions monétaires, l'Union monétaire ouest-africaine d'une part et l'Union monétaire de l'Afrique centrale d'autre part. La Common Monetary Area, qui réunit l'Afrique du Sud, le Lesotho, la Namibie et l'Eswatini (ex-Swaziland) correspond certes à une zone monétaire, mais, même si le rand sud-africain circule dans les quatre pays, chacun conserve sa propre monnaie reliée aux autres par une parité fixe. Aucun pays africain n'est en dollarisation totale, utilisant exclusivement une monnaie étrangère.
