Mortalité infantile et juvénile en Algérie du Nord
SUMMARY After reaching a very high level at the end of the war (1960-62), infant mortality and child mortality dropped sharply at the period of the Liberation but, from 1963 to 1968, no clear trend is discernible although a slight decline can be noticed in urban areas. Infant mortality rates for the generation born in 1967-1968 reach 109 per thousand in cities and 1 32 in rural areas. There is a high risk of death during the first month, and especially in the first week of life. The rates for Northern Algeria reach 5,4 % and 2,1 % respectively. The relationship between fertility and infant mortality is hardly apparent except for very fertile women. It was not possible to establish that a decline in infant mortality has exerted any traceable influence on fertility. It should be kept in mind, however, that during the last 25 years, fertility in Algeria has been consistently rising and infant mortality consistently falling. Finally an analysis of mortality differentials by birth order does not lead to conclusive finding concerning the excess mortality {endogenous as well as exogenous) for births of parties 1 and 2. If mortality does decrease with birth order, such a decrease is likely to be very slight for any given parity.
