How Much Has Renewable Electricity Generation Contributed to the Energy Transition? Analyzing Mexico Case Through Displacement Coefficients

This research calculated how much non-fossil electricity technologies have reduced fossil-based generation in Mexico over almost 20 years. Displacement coefficients and rolling windows are used. Several values are obtained, as dynamic indicators. Three data sets of electricity generation were used. The coefficients indicated partial displacement of fossil fuels. Combined cycle generated most electricity; wind and photovoltaic technologies are rising significantly. A brief analysis of the Mexican government’s climate-change policies might explain the general lack of displacement of fossil fuels and difficulty to reduce emissions.
