New-Age Dotcoms : Creative Destruction or Digital Anarchy?

Many view the emergence of ‘New-Age Dotcoms’ as foundations of tomorrow’s disruptive forces to have significant impact on many of our future products, services and even on broader creative economy, whereas others view it as a passing phase of the original disruptions brought in by the Internet itself. This case study analyzes the impact of the overall disruptions that have occurred due to the Internet on established players in sectors like telecom, media and IT. The article traces the reasons for the failure (destruction) of several dotcom firms during the 90s, and the emergence of MySpace, YouTube, Blogger, RapidShare and services like VoIP-based voice transfer that have gained high popularity among netizens. The authors explain the impact of the Internet on electronic publishing, advertisements, and the creation of blogs, citizen journalism, social networks, streaming media, and customized search, benefiting the people. The article exemplifies the future developments (some have already in the vogue) that can take place through the Internet such as Web 2.0, Network Neutrality, ubiquitous computing and many other online revolutions
