Nickel Hydroxide Decorated Trimanganese Tetroxide Nanorods Supported on Reducedgraphene-Oxide as Bifunctional Catalyst for Metal-Air Batteries
Manganese oxide (e.g. Mn3O4) is one of promising material as cathode catalyst for metal-air battery owing to low-priced, high catalytic activity, and excellent stability. Although they exhibit high catalytic activity toward ORR, pure Mn3O4 material is severely limited by the large anodic overpotential to OER and the intrinsically low conductivity. In this work, the composite materials of Ni(OH)2-decorated Mn3O4 nanorods supported on graphene sheets have been synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method. The hybrid materials are used as bifunctional electrocatalysts toward ORR/OER, and investigated by the RDE (rotating disk electrode) and metal-air battery. The results show that the sample of Mn-Ni/rGO hybrid material has good ORR/OER bifunctional catalytic activity for metal-air battery as air cathode catalyst. Based on analysis of scanning electron microscope, O2 temperature-programmed desorption analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the hybrid material present good electrochemical performance due to the coexistence of Mn4+/Mn3+ redox couple, more Mn4+ on the surface of catalysts and the behavior of oxygen desorption on theinterfaces/surfaces because of the synergism with graphene and Ni(OH)2
