Note sur l'histoire démographique de Douelle (Lot) 1676-1914
Fourastié Jean. ? Note on the demographic history of Douelle (Lot) 1676-1914. This article summarizes the demographic data contained in a book about the village of Douelle in the department of the Lot. Both family reconstitution and genealogies have been used to ascertain the major demographic characteristics of this region during the 17th and 18th centuries : a high rate of endogamous marriages, few remarriages, declining birth rates before the Revolution, a very low number of illegitimate births. The analysis of mortality rates shows that a great number of deaths were not recorded (36 % of the file cards with recorded dates of baptism did not list dates of death between 1749 and 1769). As the registration of deaths became more complete (only 12 % were not recorded between 1800 and 1809, and 15 % between 1810 and 1819) it is suspected that the new system of civil registration missed a number of births of children who died soon after birth. A comparison between civil and parochial registers confirms that children listed as having been baptised fail to appear in the civil register of births. This finding raises the question whether regional and national infant mortality rates should not be re-evaluated for the period between 1760 and 1840.
