Objectives of Long-Range Development of the Siberian Economy
In the period under review [1976-1990], Siberia can make a weightier contribution to the attainment of the general objectives of the USSR than' it is making at the present time. This stems from the indispensable and ever mounting role of Siberia in the formation of the nation's reproductive and export resources and in increasing the effectiveness of production through the use of economical fuel and raw material products. Accordingly, it will be expedient to increase Siberia's share in the output of the USSR national economy. In the last decade (by the year 1970) it reached 8% of the gross output of the nation's industry and agriculture. The Ninth Five-Year Plan envisages a relatively more rapid rate of development of Siberian industry (a 60% increase in gross output in Western Siberia, and a 68% increase in Eastern Siberia, as compared with the nationwide increase of 47%). (>u>1>/u>) Accordingly, the share of Siberia in all-union industrial output may rise (from 8.3% in 1970 to 8.9% in 1975).
