Parking Management Strategies for Gwalior
Gwalior is a settlement in Madhya Pradesh with a few salient features which project the urban image of Gwalior differently as compared to its morphogenetic characters. The major changes that have occurred in Gwalior city are created by two major trends: (1) The relocation of shopping, industry and office accommodation to more peripheral areas; and (2) the redevelopment of inner city areas, resulting in traffic patterns and further need for the parking space due to nonlinear growth patterns and concentric development at multiple Central Business Districts (CBDs). The first trend can be accounted for by the fast and growing development of an automobile culture that has facilitated moving out to peripheral or 'fringe' areas. There has been a massive expansion of pedestrian malls or high technology strips and moving businesses that would traditionally push the CBD out into a more peripheral and low expenditure zone. Some of the developing cities in India have an enhanced image compared to the images they had a few years back. Gwalior lacks this image due to socioeconomic and cultural factors, poor infrastructure development and urban imagibility, inefficient landuse planning and enforcement of bylaws. The growth of vehicle population in Gwalior is alarming. Mismanagement of vehicles in parking spaces, inadequate road spaces and poor infrastructure make the conditions worse. Public transport system is very weak and this forces the commuters to use personalized modes of transport. The economic activities are congregating and intensifying in Gwalior, as a result of which a large number of passenger and goods transport trips originate and end within the city. To sustain the urban activities of Gwalior, there should be adequate parking facilities and appropriate management
