Participation of Women in Cash Economy with Reference to the Kerala Model
Results of the Kerala Model boasts literacy rates higher than the national average, including large public expenditures that have improved the social status of women in Kerala. Kerala’s source of economic growth can mainly be attributed to the high remittances owing to the large-scale migration of Keralites to foreign countries, geographic location, good mobility and trade. Hence, the paper analyses the factors which affect female rural and urban workforce participation. Further, we will compare the Kerala model to other Indian development models and analyse the status of women employment in Kerala with reference to the Condition of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). The paper uses spatial analysis of the district-wise female rural and urban labour force participation and an econometric analysis of a monthly time series in order to determine the trends of women’s labour force participation in Kerala. In this research, we accept the alternative hypothesis, since our findings indicate a slightly significant increase in the participation of women in the cash economy of Kerala, specifically in the rural regions. The paper makes policy recommendations for additional women leadership programs, job schemes, skill development schemes and business centres that will boost female labour force participation in Kerala
