Population et ancienneté du logement. Analyse des résultats du recensement de 1968
Chesnais Jean-Claude and Nizard Alfred. Population and age of housing : 1968 census. There is a strong correlation between the characteristics of people who live in a dwelling and the date at which it was built. Old housing accommodation is more frequent in rural than urban areas. The richer social status groups usually live in recently built housing, except for " professionals, industrialists and businessmen ". Foreign immigrants are strongly under-represented in recently built dwellings. The proportion of elderly heads of household increases with age of housing. A population fitting the prevailing cultural pattern lives in the most modern dwellings, this pattern being : couples of all ages rather than solitary persons, married relatively early and with an average fertility; " nuclear " families are the rule and different generations seldom live together. Young couples who come to live in recently built housing usually settle and grow old in it. Migration does not compensate the ageing process of this population. The number of persons per dwelling increases rapidly during the 5 or 6 years following construction and decreases afterwards. Selection by other criteria than age of head of household leads to the same conclusions, although they are less pronounced.
