Poverty Alleviation in Nigeria in the 21st Century

This paper examined strategies the federal government can use to curb poverty syndrome in Nigeria in the 21st century. This is because there is a need for an economic development strategy that is anchored on human capital development; the time has come for Nigeria and other African countries to stop making unprocessed export commodities the basis of their economic development strategy. This is a momentous period for Nigeria and other African countries. To optimally explore their crude oil, copper, gold, platinum and other unprocessed export commodities to enhance our economic development. Thus, this paper aptly explains that the federal government's sound policies, efficient institutions and the right investment mix are required for Nigeria's development to lift millions of its people out of poverty and hardship. Then there is also a need for policymakers to devise means to grow the economy at a minimum of seven percent per annum. This paper adopted the descriptive methodology; it drew upon primary and secondary sources, primary sources include oral information and testimonies. Newspapers and magazine reports were also used in conjunction with official records in government publications. Secondary sources include relevant books. The researcher also made use of the direct observation method. All the information gathered was subjected to historical evaluation
