Poverty Profile and Correlates of Poverty in Pakistan : Evidence From District Vehari

Identification of factors that are strongly linked to poverty is an important aspect in developing successful strategies intended for poverty reduction. This study aims to assess the factors affecting the incidence of household poverty in rural areas of district Vehari (Pakistan). The binary logistic regression model was used for analysis. The study reveals that nearly 34.8 percent of respondents in the area are poor. Socio-economic empowerment, dependence ratio, household size, economic activity of head of household, access to finance, marital status, and age of household head is significantly influencing the incidence of poverty in the studied region. Moreover, the government is also responsible in providing proper infrastructural settings. This paper recommends that, households in this area should be empowered to have positive attitudes towards participating into economic and social activities using resources around them
