Product Orientation in Indian Software Services Organizations : What is the Future?
The paper aims at studying the effects transition of Indian software industries from project based to product based, what are the issues and future of Indian software industry when it actually goes the product way. The paper is based on the current trends in the Indian software industry. The Indian software firms predominantly are process based and they offer maintenance services to their clients. In the global operations, this ploy may not succeed in the long run because offering services will reduce the differentiation in the long run. With the western world clearly trying to show an interest in other South East Asian developing nations, India might have to lose its pie in the software services share. In the paper, an attempt has been made to suggest changes to the existing business model that the software organizations are following to make product development a feasible option. The paper discusses product development strategies and organizational implications for the same. The paper also provides alternatives, in case a firm is unable to dedicate resources to pursue research and hence develop products. In such cases, a firm can continue with its existing structure and provide differentiation through patented processes, thereby having their uniqueness intact. The paper is centered on transforming process based organizations into product based organizations thereby meeting the global challenges of having uniqueness for India’s developing software industry in the global scenario. The following questions are sought to be discussed and studied during the course of the project: •Why do Indian companies go for project based predominantly and still have not come to the product based? •What are the current methodologies that are adopted by companies in marketing their services? •How should the companies re-structure their marketing infrastructure and processes to suit product based approach? •How should the companies work their marketing mix? •What is the future of Indian software industry in 2 hypothetical scenarios: a) If the companies continue their current project based approach for the next 15 years, b) If the companies decide to launch new products?
