Productividad y poder de mercado oligopsónico en la agricultura peruana

Results from the estimation of several specifications of a production function (Cobb-Douglas and constant-elasticity-of-substitution, CES) do not provide evidence of the existence of increasing returns to scale in the Peruvian agriculture. Our results also suggest the existence of market power in the cotton market, although we are unable to determine whether the market structure is oligopolistic or monopsonistic. Furthermore, we find that the productivity, estimated as the residual of the production function estimation, is positively correlated with age, sex, and education, and negatively correlated with the farming unit’s acreage. La estimación de distintas especificaciones de funciones de producción agrícola (CobbDouglas y de elasticidad de sustitución constante, CES) para el Perú no apoya la hipótesis de la existencia de retornos crecientes a escala. Además, observamos evidencia de la existencia de poder de mercado en el caso del algodón, aun cuando no hallamos el valor del coeficiente que refleja la estructura de ese mercado (oligopsónica o monopsónica). Asimismo, encontramos que la productividad, medida como el residuo de la estimación de dicha función, está positivamente correlacionada con la edad, el sexo, y la educación; y negativamente relacionada con el tamaño de la unidad agropecuaria.
