Property and Family Well-Being
Our calculations show that the rate of accumulation of personal property is quite high, that it is faster than current consumption. Thus, between 1960 and 1985, retail trade turnover in state and cooperative trade grew 4.1 times while the volume of personal property at its initial value increased more than 6 times. In the fifties, items of one-time use and medium service life predominated. Elements of property with a long service life have now become mass consumption items. The value of personal property in 1985 exceeded the current consumption of material goods by 23 percent. The volume of personal property per family and per person has increased substantially: from 1,566 rubles for the average family in 1960 to 7,309 rubles in 1985, i.e., 4.6 times. Its per capita value during this period increased to a somewhat greater degreeâby 5.1 times due to the reduction of the size of the average family.
