Prospects of Pv Energy Systems in Addressing Energy Poverty in Syria

Standalone solar PV systems are a powerful technology to meet energy needs of small rural dwellings in an affordable, reliable, and environmentally friendly approach. These systems provide a solution to tackle energy poverty (EP) and as key tools for sustainable well-being, economic prosperity, and environmental preservation. In this study, actual EP in North and Northwest Syria was compared between 2021 and 2018. Also, levels of EP between users and non-users of PV systems are measured, and the rates of EP reduction are determined. Structured and semi-structured questionnaires were prepared and 440 households were surveyed to determine EP and the prospects for PV systems usage. Some of the income/expenditure ratio measurement approaches, and the Multidimensional Energy Deprivation Index were employed to analyze EP. We provide a more comprehensive assessment of EP and the great impact of the crisis on energy supplies. We present a framework that combines an electricity cost model and a household expenditure survey to show the effects that the adoption of PV energy subsidies can have on EP through added electricity expenditures. This will help to promote PV energy projects in the aid programs and public policies to achieve a better quality of life in these conflict areas
