Public Pension Reserve Fund Management and the Media

Organizations in charge of managing public pension reserve funds need to be independent (e.g., free of political interference) and to comply with stringent accountability requirements. One of the key issues when they disclose information to the general public is how to use the media as information gatekeepers. It would also be helpful if universities could offer training courses for journalists on pension systems so that they could improve their understanding of the subject. Japan's Government Pension Investment Fund (GPIF) should try to be innovative in this regard and draw on the experience of its counterparts in other countries
