Quality Assurance in Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) Sandwich Programmes in Science, Technology and Mathematics Education (STME) in Nigeria : Implications for Primary and Junior Secondary Schools

The introduction of Universal Basic Education is a pointer to the fact that government desires something done at the primary and junior secondary school levels to make average Nigerians scientifically and technologically literate. This paper is of the view that the dream is realizable if only the teachers who mainly are products of NCE Sandwich Programmes are specially prepared for the task. This paper therefore examines quality assurance in NCE Sandwich Programmes in Science, Technology and Mathematics Education (STME) in Nigeria and the necessary implications it hold for effective primary and junior secondary schools. The paper stressed the need to ensure quality in schools running NCE Sandwich Programmes in STME. It is recommended among others that National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) should make accreditation visit to schools running NCE Sandwich Programmes in STM with emphasis on course and semester duration, practical and content coverage, microteaching and teaching practice as well as the use of inquiry oriented approaches to deliver lessons in STM
