Le present article aborde le sujet de la migration interprovinciale en fonction de la question fondamentale suivante : < Qui sont les migrants? > Des modeles logits par panel de la probabilite de migrer d'une annee a l'autre sont estimes au moyen d'echantillons tires de la Banque de donnees administratives longitudinales, couvrant la periode 1982-1995. Parmi les variables explicatives, notons les facteurs < environnementaux >, les caracteristiques personnelles, les attributs du marche du travail et une serie de variables relatives a l'annee. Des modeles distincts ont ete estimes pour huit groupes d'age-sexe.
Les principaux resultats sont les suivants : i) les taux de migration sont inversement associes a la taille de la province, ce qui traduit vraisemblablement la conjoncture economique, les effets d'echelle du marche du travail et la simple distance geographique; la langue tient egalement un role important a cet egard; ii) les personnes vivant dans les petits centres urbains, les petites villes et, plus particulierement, dans les regions rurales sont moins susceptibles de migrer que les residents de grands centres urbains; iii) l'age, le fait d'etre marie et la presence d'enfants sont negativement associes a la mobilite, tant pour les hommes que pour les femmes; iv) la migration est positivement liee au taux de chomage provincial, a la perception de prestations d'assurance-emploi (sauf dans le cas des hommes a l'age d'entree), a des revenus d'emploi nuls (sauf dans le cas des hommes et des femmes a l'age d'entree) et a la perception de prestations d'aide sociale (notamment chez les hommes); v) abstraction faite des revenus nuls, la migration est positivement liee aux niveaux de revenu pour les hommes d'age moyen et mur, mais non pour les autres, et ces effets sont generalement peu prononces (les autres facteurs etant neutralises); vi) on n'observe pas de variations tres marquees des taux de migration au fil des ans; neanmoins, les taux de migration des hommes ont legerement flechi au cours des annees 1990, tandis que, chez les femmes (exception faite des femmes a l'age d'entree), ces taux sont generalement restes stables ou ont augmente legerement, ce qui indique une divergence des tendances selon le sexe.
