Reconstitution automatique des familles par le programme « Hochelaga »
SUMMARY The phonetic code for family names developed by L. Henry and the weighting system devised by H.B. Newcombe enable research workers, from now on, to use data processing for family reconstruction when parish-registers of good quality are available. The first three parts of a much more comprehensive program make it possible to link marriages to the corresponding births, as a first step to complete family reconstruction. The initial stages of the " Hochelaga " program, applied to the Canadian parish registers of the 17th century have proved quite successful. This result shows that, in the future, computers may be of great help in historical demography.
