Regulation of Space Activities in Canada

Abstract by B. Goswami: “Canada has been a player with moderate activity in space front and though it cannot be said to be in the league of major space powers, it has fairly developed its legal framework to address different aspects related to use and exploration of outer space. Canada has ratified major space treaties, except the Moon Agreement, and to some extent implemented its obligations flowing from such treaties while at the same time unequivocally assuming international responsibility for its space activities. This chapter focuses on discussing and outlining the regulatory legal framework starting with Constitutional and organizational set-up furthering the discussion into regulations which govern specific activities such as launch activities, export controls, satellite communication, human space activity and micro-gravity research, remote sensing and military uses of outer space.”
