Reinterpretation of the Ancient Indian Jewellery
The most spectacular and attractive items of personal adornment of people is jewellery. The colour, brightness, lasting value, and the scarcity of the materials for these specialties, jewelleries attract man. From the hoary past, men used jewellery made of various materials. Various parts of the body were used to be decorated with jewellery. With the change of time, many more materials such as ivory, copper and semi-precious stones and then to silver, gold and precious stones were used for making jewelleries, which are used even today. The various types of jewelleries have also been referred to in literature. Various sites of India have recorded jewelleries of different materials from early historic levels. From the human figurines unearthed from various ancient sites it appears that jewelleries were spontaneously worn by all classes alike; necklaces, fillets, armlets, girdles, and finger rings by both men and women; while the women particularly used to wear head jewellery, rings, bangles, and anklets. In ancient times, jewels and jewelleries were more than ornaments; these were believed to have some magical and occult power. To protect himself from evil power man used to wear jewelleries. Therefore, despite enhancing the gorgeousness of the wearer, Indian jewellery is a symbol of affluence and goodness, marital status, and happiness. Jewellery also indicates the economic condition of the ancient society. From these, it is evident that the people of ancient times were carrying on profitable trade with various countries, in which jewelleries and precious stones were of great importance. This article tries to reinterpret the ancient Indian jewelleries in the light of socio-economic condition
