Repatriation : factors related to individuals' expectations of international assignments
This thesis isconcerned with understanding the expectations that corporateemployees formabout the work- and career-related outcomes of aninternational assignment.Suchexpectations arefrequentlycited asbeing "unreasonable"and a majorsource of problemsin the repatriation and reintegration ofinternationalreturnees.There is, however,alack of research evidence to indicate whenthese expectations form, how they change with time, or whatfactors influencetheir formation.The research takes aUKperspective inview of the comparatively low levelsofresearch into British international assigneesingeneral and their motivationsand expectations inparticular.Theauthorbelieves this to be the firststudy devotedexclusively to theexpectations ofinternational assignees.Themain stage of this research comprised of a postal survey to collectinformation aboutinternational assignees, about their work-related and career-related expectations, and about a number offactorswhich might prove to beprecursors or predictors of expectations.Datawere capturedfromacomparativelyhomogeneouspopulation comprisingBritish employees ofprofit-making companies.Themain contribution of this thesis isanincrease inour understanding of thework-related and career-related expectations that corporate employeesformwhen assigned overseas.Inparticular, the thesis increases ourknowledgeofwhen these expectationsform; how they vary with time; and what personalcharacteristics, actions taken by the employing organisation, andcharacteristics of the assignmentitselfaffect those expectationsduring thecourse of aninternational assignment.A secondary contribution of this thesis is to identifya number of classes orcategories of assignment that appear to be intrinsically associated withdifferent types and degreesof expectation.
