Revealing the Unequal Cultural Consumption Patterns among Children across Brazil
Research has shown that cultural consumption has several positive effects on children's development, such as socio-emotional development, school aspirations, academic proficiency, and cultural capital formation. However, little is known empirically about the spatial distribution of cultural consumption by children in large developing economies, such as Brazil, and even less is known about how socioeconomic and environmental factors condition children’s cultural consumption in such unequal settings. This study uses microdata from the 2017 National Basic Education Assessment System, including socioeconomic and cultural consumption questionnaires from 1.2 million 5th-grade students in Brazilian public schools across 5521 municipalities. The results of the exploratory statistical and spatial econometric analysis show a very unequal spatial and individual distribution of cultural consumption, which is significantly influenced by the socioeconomic level, gender, school area, habits, and parental literacy of the students. This profound inequality in cultural consumption implies significant bottlenecks and opportunities for cultural learning across Brazil
