Rhinoceroses Are Not Like Sneakers

This Response - to Michael Pappas and Victor Flatt's Climate Changes Property: Disasters, Decommodification, and Retreat - summarizes how Profs. Pappas and Flatt argue for a new context within which to change the commodification of property. The argued-for changes provide a path towards adaptation and resilience. This Response focuses on assumptions and implementation, two challenges remaining unanswered at the conclusion of the article. If we can bring about this scope of change – and it would be significant – why not other changes at the same time, which would lower the current adjustment failure costs around vulnerable properties? Line drawing will also be a significant challenge, as will funding. Providing alternative paths forward, this Response provides additional thoughts on implementation, buyouts, and remaining open questions
