Role of Traditional Beliefs and Cultural Myths in Environmental Conservation - A Case Study from Kabjisa, Punakha, Bhutan
Traditional beliefs and cultural myths play a very important role in conserving the environment in Bhutan. However, these beliefs and myths are passed from generation to generation via oral transmission and people are unaware of it. Also, there is less written information in the country. Therefore, this study documents traditional beliefs and cultural myths in the conservation of the environment, factors that have led to the deterioration of environments, and how these beliefs and myths are changing over time, in Kabjisa Gewog under Punakha Dzongkhag. Snowball sampling was used to collect data from 44 respondents. The data was collected through face-to-face interviews using open-ended questionnaires. The finding reveals that some forests, lakes, and trees are considered as a citadel of deities; thus, they are conserved. The people who are constantly interdependent on the immediate environment revered the age-old beliefs; this further fortified the conservation of the environment. Similarly, the myths of Lama Drukpa Kuenley and Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal also helped in the conservation of the environment. Lack of proper institutions, the influence of modernization, and the absence of legal rights over these sacred places are the major factors leading to its decline. Therefore, incorporating these beliefs and myths in modern day conservation strategies can help in better conservation of our environment. Moreover, to revive these beliefs and myths, there is an immediate need for setting up an institution primarily focused on this subject matter
