Security, Stability, Prosperity : Strategic Role of Security in China's Belt and Road Initiative
The purpose of this paper is to review recent research on China’s foreign policy under president Xi Jinping since the announcement of the Belt and Road Initiative, analyzing the links of military power, political and economic interests to identify overarching strategic links that account for a change of the country’s use of armed forces outside its territory. The main question this paper seeks to address, is which strategic interests abroad are likely to be pursued through the utilization of the military and to determine which effect the BRI may have on future security commitments. This paper draws its theoretical approach from the perspective of strategic realism. The People’s Republic of China (PRC), in this context viewed as an individual political actor, is focused on as the central unit of analysis; aiming to describe and evaluate the actor’s opportunities and available choices, their costs and limitations
