Significant Changes to Adoption in Queensland
On 1 February 2010 the new Adoption Act 2009 commenced in Queensland replacing the antiquated Adoption of Children Act 1964. The new Act makes a number of major changes to adoption practices in Queensland supporting contemporary, child-focused and efficient adoption reflecting current community standards, best practice and brings this state in line with the practice of other Australian states and territories.The Adoption Act 2009 can be found at the following link:http://www.legislation.qld.gov.au/LEGISLTN/ACTS/2009/09AC029.pdf In addition the Queensland Government has committed $1.2 million over three years to provide a dedicated post adoption support service, to be run by the Benevolent Society, for people affected by adoption in Queensland. In particular, this new service will be able to support people affected by the commencement of the Adoption Act 2009.The newly established Post Adoption Support Queensland (PASQ) will provide counselling and support to people affected by adoption offering a: * telephone counselling and support * face-to-face counselling * support and information during the search process * mediation and assistance for people wishing to make contact with relatives.
