Smart Growth and Sustainable Development : Threads of a National Land Use Policy

This article is intended to shift attention away from the growing literature on state smart growth issues and focus on the continuing interest at the federal level with respect to land use planning and smart-growth issues. Although the article does not advocate a national land use policy, it does demonstrate that there has been a de facto national policy and agenda in the making in the nation's capital under the guise of sustainable development and that this is merely an extension of the historical federal interest and influence in land use policy
