Song From the Sea : Maritime Influence on Indonesian Popular Songs in the 1980s

This study examines the influence of maritime affairs on the development of Indonesian popular songs in the 1980s. During the 1980s period, maritime events and issues became one of the discourses that developed in society. This is inseparable from the burning incident of the Tampomas II ship which resulted in hundreds of deaths. Not only the Tampomas II tragedy, the 1980s was marked by the issue of damage to marine ecosystems in Indonesia. After the Indonesian government issued Presidential Decree number 39 of 1980 regarding the ban on the use of tiger trawling, in fact large fishermen took advantage of the emergence of a new, more destructive technology, namely the fish bomb. As a result, damage occurs under the sea, especially damage to coral reefs. These themes prompted the emergence of critical voices from musicians who gave birth to musical works to challenge the damage to the sea.In the end, this research will answer the question about the extent of the relationship between Indonesian music and maritime issues in the 1980s? In fact, the works of a number of Indonesian musicians in the 1980s were not only about art, but also became part of the contemporary Indonesian maritime history script. This research will also prove how maritime has played an important role from the start in shaping the archipelago culture, local culture, and Indonesian popular culture
