Sovereign Wealth Funds in Southeast Asia

This paper provides background on sovereign wealth funds in Southeast Asia: Brunei Investment Agency (BIA), Timor-Leste Petroleum Fund (PT), Singapore's GIC and Temasek, Malaysia's Khazanah and 1MDB, and Vietnam's State Capital Investment Corporation (SCIC). These funds are diverse in their origins, purposes, and governance. Given their lack of transparency and their ownership by the states, the paper points out some concerns over the sovereign wealth funds, namely, potential of mismanagement of the public fund, political interference, and adverse perception from foreign countries in which the funds invest
