Strukturelle Anpassungen der chinesischen Automobilzulieferindustrie
Based on the requirements and structures of the global automotive industry, hypotheses for the development of the Chinese automotive supplier industry after opening and WTO entry are discussed. It is found that despite the open door policy towards foreign investors and free market reforms, the Chinese government utilizes vari-ous industrial policy measures to control and channel the investments of foreign vehicle manufacturers and components suppliers. The government has succeeded in maximizing technology transfer from foreign to local companies, while at the same time protecting local automotive companies from global competition and supporting key national players. However, despite the quick improvement in quality, efficiency and competitiveness of the best Chinese components manufacturers, few Chinese suppliers have acquired the techno-logical know-how necessary for independent research and development. The protective measures have slowed down the process of consolidation and the overall reform ofzthe industry and have kept many local companies alive despite their failure to modernize.
