Study on How Economic Reforms Have Affected Tourism in India Over the Decade

The reform process in India since 1991 was initiated with the aim of accelerating the pace of economic growth and eradication of poverty. This study makes an attempt to study how economic reforms have affected tourism in India over the decade. The objectives of the study are to analyse the Indian economy over the decade and identify economic trends, to assess how Indian economic reforms have affected tourism over the decade and discuss measures that define the parameters for improvement of tourism in India over the next decade. Descriptive research approach was employed for the research and data was collected predominantly from secondary sources. The findings of the study reveal that dominance of the public sector on the industry to a larger extent stifle the growth of the industry. Moreover, controlled liberalization of the sector in the hands of private entities and corporations can contribute to the accelerated growth of the industry which leads to revenue generation for the government. It is therefore concluded that India's overall economic performance has high prospects in the years to come. As a results, tourism as an industry is likely to improve by leaps and bounds considering the positive effects the economy of India has exerted on the industry
