Symposium on Decoding Maldives’ Foreign Investment and Arbitration Law Regime

Foreign investment is the backbone of Maldives economy. However, the proliferation of investment arbitration against the Maldives may deeply hamper its investment regime. Since Maldives Foreign Investment Law does not refers to any preferred mode of dispute settlement, every investment agreement has referred to different dispute settlement body. This does not only create a huge challenge for the Maldives to fight multiple arbitration in different jurisdictions and subject to different laws but also suggest the weakness of Maldives legal system in terms of protecting the foreign investors. Therefore, this symposium seeks investigate reasons for lack of dispute settlement regime in Maldives and to suggest possible solutions to strengthen Maldives judicial system ensuring the protection of foreign investors under domestic laws
