The Critical Success Factors on Information Systems Development

Innovations like Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have today become an integral and indispensable facilitator in the business organizations. Sri Lanka is fast progressing into ICT. Computerized information system is used as a competitive weapon by the managers of the companies to face challenges which arise from their competitors. There is a question whether the information system projects are developed for the above requirements are successfully completed and maintained comparing to the other non-information system projects. The objective of the study is to identify factors caused for the successful development of information systems. This study was based on primary data gathered through a structured questionnaire from 62 software developers in medium size software development organizations from the Colombo and suburban areas of the western province in Sri Lanka and the study was restricted to non-technical components. The gathered Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate statistical techniques. Among the identified factors, the most critical success factors are involvement of user, user requirement, and management support. Further, the other affecting factors would be identification of client politics, elicitation of client policies and procedures, senior level project sponsorship for the entire project
